Outlaw

At 34 years old, Outlaw is the oldest pony at Image of Hope Ranch — but you would never know it by watching her. While age may have slowed some horses down, Outlaw still keeps right up with the younger horses, carrying herself with quiet confidence and determination. There is wisdom in her eyes and steadiness in her presence that only comes with time.

Before coming to the ranch, Outlaw worked as a speed pony, and she was known for being incredibly fast. Though her racing days are behind her now, that spirited heart still shines through from time to time. Beneath her calm and gentle demeanor is a horse who once loved to fly across arenas with the wind. Today, Outlaw carries a different kind of purpose. She has an old-soul personality that draws people in, especially children who may feel nervous or uncertain around horses. For those who are a little afraid, Outlaw seems to understand exactly what they need. She approaches softly, stands patiently, and offers the kind of gentleness that helps fearful hearts begin to relax.

One young boy came to the ranch carrying a deep fear of horses. Even being close to one felt overwhelming to him. Trust did not happen quickly. Week after week, Outlaw patiently met him where he was. She never rushed him or demanded more than he could give. Slowly, through quiet moments together, obstacle courses, gentle walks, and simply being near her, the boy began to feel safe. Today, he is comfortable and confident around Outlaw, and something that once felt impossible has now become a dream — he talks about the day he will finally ride a horse. Outlaw helped him discover that courage does not always come in giant leaps. Sometimes it grows one patient step at a time.

One of Outlaw’s favorite things is walking obstacle courses with the children she works with. Pole by pole, step by step, she helps them build confidence, courage, and trust. What makes Outlaw especially remarkable is her sensitivity to the child leading or riding her. If a child feels uncertain or overwhelmed, Outlaw instinctively slows her pace, matching exactly what the child needs in that moment. She never rushes them. She teaches them that it is okay to move slowly and that confidence does not have to happen all at once.

Outlaw reminds us that gentleness is powerful and that growing older does not lessen purpose. In many ways, her years have made her exactly the horse children need — patient, wise, steady, and safe.
