Fergus
At first glance, Fergus is hard to miss. His large draft-cross frame and towering presence can make him seem bigger than life — but it only takes a moment near him to discover the gentle heart underneath. Fergus came to Image of Hope Ranch after struggling in the heat and humidity of Florida, where breathing became difficult for him. What arrived at the ranch was not just a horse in need of a home, but a quiet gift for the children and families who walk through our gates.
Fergus has a calm and steady spirit that naturally puts people at ease. Despite his size, he moves carefully around children, lowering his head softly for grooming, standing patiently beside nervous hands, and offering a sense of safety that words often cannot provide. Many participants who feel overwhelmed by the world find comfort simply being near him. There is something healing about standing next to a horse so strong, yet so gentle.
One of Fergus’ favorite things is showing off the many tricks he has learned over the years. Whether it’s making people laugh with his playful personality or proudly demonstrating a new skill, Fergus seems to know when a child needs a reason to smile. His playful moments often become the bridge to connection, confidence, and joy.
But perhaps one of the sweetest things about Fergus is his love for music. When a little one stands nearby and quietly sings, Fergus will often make his way over just to listen. With his ears softly forward and his gentle eyes fixed on the child, he seems completely captivated by their voice. In those moments, children who may feel unseen or unheard suddenly realize they have the attention of this great gentle giant. It is a simple but beautiful reminder that connection does not always require words.
Fergus was truly meant to come to Image of Hope Ranch. Many children who come to the ranch find themselves deeply connected to a specific horse. One young girl had formed that kind of bond with a horse named Bunny. Their connection was deep and meaningful, and when Bunny passed away, it left an ache in the girl’s heart that felt impossible to move beyond. She tried to connect with other horses, but grief stood in the way. No horse felt like Bunny. Then Fergus arrived.
Slowly, gently, and without pressure, Fergus helped her discover something important — that loving one horse deeply did not mean her heart could never connect again. Through Fergus, she learned that grief and healing can exist together, and that opening your heart again is not a betrayal of what was lost. Fergus helped fill a space that once felt empty, reminding her that connection is still possible after loss.
Fergus reminds us that strength and gentleness can live together beautifully. He carries not only riders and participants, but also heavy emotions, anxious hearts, grief, and stories that need a safe place to land.
